Message: Have the pre purchase inspection done post purchase and get a baseline on the overall condition of the car.

Immediate things that come to mind, bad plug wire, short in injection wiring, bad ground connection. Plug wire can be checked by looking at the engine rev in the dark with the hood up. Grounds can all be freshened up.

If you put a set of 89 chips in your brains I think they will have diagnostic info that can be read.

What area are you in, hooking up with the locals is a very good idea.
