Re: Maybe you can answer this alternator question. (159 views)
Message: Hi 785spd,

Well,
I did ALL THAT too! LOL
I have been an auto technician for many years, and found it VERY HARD to believe that both alternators were bad (even for rebuilt models). OK, maybe one going bad, I can understand....But, 2??? Something fishy....

To answer your question, I'd bet you still have an alternator issue...It really wouldn't surprise me...I bought THREE ALTERNATORS! First 2 were JUNK rebuilt models, but this new one seemed to fix everything.

I cleaned contacts, all new fuses, fixed as many wiring problems as I could fix (I have very limited time to work on my cars nowadays), and STILL had the SAME symptoms as you are having. The SAME EXACT symptoms!

Absolutely fed up with it, I just took it to a wire specialist, and they found that the entire rebuilt alternator was JUNK! Every component inside the alt casing was absolute crap!

We just got a BRAND NEW BOSCH alternator (95amp), and it fixed EVERY PROBLEM I HAD! I couldn't believe it!

I did however, still have a battery drain, but they found out that it was from someone (previously) who tried to do "something" (God knows what), had messed up one or two wires which were controlling the interior lights (dash, doors, dome, etc)....Well, that's fixed, and the car is like NEW! The entire console & dash had to get ripped out just to find the short.

I knew it had something to do with that circuit, I just couldn't find it!

Only took $1000! LOL

BUT, it's fixed! NO MORE PROBLEMS!!!!

Funny,
Right after installing the 2nd alternator, everything was working great! I was getting almost 14V reading!!! I was like, "YEAH BABY!"

I was in the driveway, checking fluids, getting ready for a nice Summer drive, letting it warm-up, washed it, etc etc.....Until 15 minutes later, everything started going crazy again....Same symptoms, same issues, same warning buzzers going off, lights getting dim, radio cutting out, you name it....UGH! I was so mad! Apparently, the components inside the alternator only lasted all of 15 minutes, and that's about it....Same as the first alternator!

My wire guy said "This has to be the worst rebuilt alternator I have ever seen!"

IF, you decide to bite the bullet for a new alt, I'd be willing to bet that your problems will probably fade away. Although, I won't entirely rule out a wiring / electrical problem (very possible)....

But, I was about ready to bet my wire specialist that there was a wiring problem, and NOT an alternator problem! However, in my case, it was a little of both.....BUT, the ALT was THE root cause of ALL of my lighting, buzzers, radio, dash problem...NOT the small wire problem! That ONLY caused my battery to drain.

Chris
