| Message: | Just to second Chris' comments of a few months ago, I was still too cheap to buy a new alternator, so I went to a mechanic I trust somewhat to do upkeep when I'm lazy, asked him where he sends out his own clients' alternators to get rebuilt, he directed me to a local shop that does it in-house, they charged me $100 dollars, the next day the alternator came back re-built, and it's worked fine now for about 1,000 miles, full charge across the battery (dash gauge still unreliable, of course). The story on the stock Porsche alternators, according to the local re-build shop, is that there are some unusual parts that need replacing, but which not every re-build shop carries or wants to replace due to expense. It still seems that, given that the true cost for a re-build is about $100 with only one middleman, a proper re-build "kit" would not be too difficult to install if offered for sale at Kragen, etc. If even I can re-build a carb with a proper kit, how difficult can an alternator be? Maybe something for 928Int'l and the other suppliers to think about? Dave | ||||
